A Strange Phenomenon

Sure you have heard of Amway. Maybe you read somewhere that it doesn’t work, or heard from your friends that it’s a fraud, or were even approached by an Amway business owner with a proposition that you thought couldn’t possibly be real. However you found out, most of you have heard about Amway. Those of you who have, know everything about it. You are experts, no doubt. Everybody knows about Amway.

I knew nothing about Amway when I was approached with a proposition to join the business. I heard the plan, I heard the success stories, I heard about the money involved, I heard about the method of earning that money, and I realized it was not for me. It was not my cup of tea. I didn’t have the time, or the money to invest in it. I didn’t believe it could work with such little effort as I was asked to put in it. It felt oppressive, clannish, cultish, hard to fit in, and even downright evil. The truth was, it felt too good to be true, so I assumed it wasn’t. Even then, I was curious. So I asked my friends about it.

Do you know what Amway is? Sure, it’s a fraud. Don’t join.

Do you know what Amway is? I’ve heard about it. It doesn’t work. Don’t join.

Do you know what Amway is? It’s a downright hoax. It’s illegal. Don’t join.

Do you know what Amway is? It’s network marketing. It’s some kind of a pyramid scheme. Don’t join.

Do you know what Amway is? It’s a cult. The people there are nuts. Don’t join.

Do you know what Amway is? Don’t join.

NOBODY I knew knew what it was, but the name of Amway was mud. Don’t join, don’t join, don’t join was all anybody knew. So I changed my question.

Do you know how Amway works? Sure, you trick people into joining you and make profits at their expense. Don’t join.

Do you know how Amway works? Yeah, you force people into buying some crappy products and make money off them. Don’t join.

Do you know how Amway works? Don’t join.

If everyone says it’s bad, it must be bad, right? Who needs to know what products Amway has, what brands they are from? Who needs to know their business model? Who needs to know their turnover? Who needs to know how long it’s been around? Who needs to know any kind of statistics? I mean, when everyone you know says it’s bad it must be bad, right? Wrong.

After some research, I found out some things about Amway that nobody seemed to know. The company has been in existence for 50 years in 90 plus countries all over the world; 10 years in India. They have tie-ups with over 17,000 companies worldwide, with many thousands of products and growing. Their product brands are among the best in the word. They are the number-one business in their class of businesses, and the only one that has survived so long. With a yearly turnover of billions of dollars, they have enabled thousands of people to become millionaires in as little as 2 years. They have an almost-fool-proof way, which, if you follow correctly, can yield results beyond your wildest imagination, can fulfill your every dream directly or indirectly and can give you not just hope, but actual fulfillment of the future, not in the future, but today. The list is just endless.

Do you know what Amway is? No.

Do you know how Amway works? No.

Yet the name of Amway remains mud.

I realized that the only way to find out more about Amway was to join Amway. I joined. Even then, it took me quite a while to even begin to understand the plan and the way it works. I went to business meetings, I attended lectures, I read books, and listened to tapes and CD’s about Amway. Initially, I was embarrassed. The seeds of doubt sown by my friends when I had asked them about Amway had been sprouting, so that business meetings started looking like cult gatherings and the books and tapes like a cunning way to hide fraud, even when I was using many of the products.

How are the products? Some are not useful for me, even though others use them. After all, to each his own, right? Some products are decent. Most, however, work like a charm. It is magic, the way the health products make me feel alive, the cleaning products show me a better, cleaner way of living and using them slowly started cleaning out the weeds of failure, doubt and hopelessness that had taken root in my mind after hearing all the negative things about Amway. Slowly, I stopped looking at Amway as a business of selling people soap, and started looking at it as a business of giving people hope. As I read the books and listened to tapes, I started getting convinced that this could work, that this was a fantastic opportunity come knocking at my door. Most would call it brainwashing, I know, but I prefer to think of it as a process of unlearning and relearning. I unlearned all the negative stuff that I had been told about Amway and learned for the first time, from the experts, what Amway actually was.

Even though I now believe, I remain slightly aloof, because I still fear a little. I fear that like many people who took the wrong path, I might become a fanatic who hounds people to join the business. I fear that by asking friends and family to join the business, by asking these people who do not know anything but think they know everything about the-fraud-that-is-Amway, I might lose their friendship and respect.

I fear, even though I know there is no reason to. I know that this business can give me financial freedom with relatively little effort that no employment in the world can give. I know that this business will teach me something that no school has ever taught its students: to grow money. Schools teach people how to be good employees, not how to be good at growing money. I know that this business can give me relatively unlimited money and unlimited time to do with as I want. I know this business can open a whole group of people that become friends to help enrich my life by being there for me. I know this business will give me the chance to improve myself while earning money that no course in personal development can give. I know this business will give me the confidence to do things I want to do and the time and money to do them. I know that this business will set me free.

I know all this because I have joined the business and seen their plan. I have overcome my prejudices formed on the basis of what others don’t know and there I have seen success. I had large dreams that couldn’t become reality in my job that are now larger and possible to fulfill. All because I allowed myself to pass judgment based only on what was real and true and not based on what others thought was true but wasn’t real.

Am I asking you to join the business? No. Even if I did, I wouldn’t ask you to join the business, I would ask you to join me, because Amway is not about building business, but about building people. No. I am not even asking you to join me, because that would be asking you to believe me, when I have given you no direct reason to do so. But we humans are supposed to be rational beings, capable of logical thought, intelligent creatures walking with heads held high and backs erect. If you are one of us- as I know you are- I am asking you to read the book that is Amway without prejudging it by the cover placed on it by people who haven’t read it. I am asking you to find out the truth about Amway before passing judgment on its nature. Because I know that when you do find out the truth about Amway, you will join us, and we will walk the beaches of the world together.

I really enjoyed reading your article about Amway…I have been using the products for about 20 years, I won’t use any other laundry products. I am so disheartened with my profession that I am thinking about building the business and have been reading some of the responses about Amway. Yours is the most uplifting and most promising of all that I have read. I believe after reading your letter that I will be able to make this a profitable business for myself and my family. Thank you.

This was awesome! You have answered so many questions for me. I have been exposed to Amway for years through my parents. I have just recently become and IBO under my friend that I grew up with. Whom was also exposed to the business through her parents. We never fully understood what it was to be in Amway. We just knew that we had fun on the trips while our parents sat in “boring” meetings. My friend (and upline) loves going to those “boring” meetings. She passed along your blog and told me I HAD to read it. She is excited that we will be seeing you on stage during the Summer Conference. After reading this, I am excited as well. You looked at Amway through every angle. Even when everyone was telling you it was a scam, you sought to know the truth. One of my biggest worries in my quest to give people the chance to be in this business, is being able to answer their concerns. You have been an excellent resource in knowing how to answer some questions. Again, awesome job! Look forward to seeing you speak in July!!

  1. J.D.,

Thanks for taking the time to post your thoughts. I love the analogy of reading the book of Amway first and not judging it by its cover.

    Business Developers. (AMWAY)
I believe that this business model is the premium home based business. I had a traditional brick and mortar business, sold it because of the time restriction that came with the type of business model. I started Real Estate Investing as a new career, and did very well. But then there was this buzz about people making a lot of money online, and being the entrepreneur that I am I had to get in on it. So I did, I tried every online business out there, but there are few that actually works. I found some that in fact made me money, I have a couple of them on my profile page. I am going to have a few more in the near future. Now back to this I-Commerce business given, this business model is NOT for everyone. Not even for me, or so I thought. I was first approached by a relative of mine. I was very apprehensive but as a favor to my relative I said ok, let me see what’s this about.
I saw the plan by my relative sponsoring IBO, he was in his late 40’s he had a mechanical Engineering degree from MIT and had quit his job for about 4 yrs. Get this he was accompanied by his sponsoring IBO, his classmate and best friend from MIT, whose wife by the way was a medical doctor. Now in my culture, Engineering, MD, Scientist, anything that involves the WHITE COAT is the only job that’s really acceptable . I myself had a decent educational background, which coincidentally happen to be in the field of business. To make a long story short, I jumped in, I did not even listen to the plan. I knew if these Indians quit their jobs after becoming successful in Amway there is no way this business model did not work, and that is how I got in Amway. For anyone who is looking, look no further. This is the perfect home based business.
But don’t just listen to me or Mr. Jaideep Ranade, about Amway. In North America the only source that can be trusted in evaluating and validating a company or business is The Better Business Bureau. If you really want to know, visit the “BBB” website. 2. What a great blog post. You’ve really laid it out there in black and white and I can only hope that many will stumble upon your site and take some time to read.

If there is one thing I could encourage anyone to do when considering this business: Investigate it from the inside! It’s risk free and the only real way to make an informed decision about the company, their products and the equal opportunity they offer anyone.

  3. When i visit a blog, chances are that I notice that most blogs are amateurish. On the contrary,I have to say that you have done a good job here.

  4. you are good. write more

  5. wow… thanks a lot writing this
